A year ago, we bought a stock trailer. Here is what happened. We began letting the boys see it right away. When we tried training them to go in it took less than five minutes to get each one in. I used the clicker and animal crackers to lure Shunka in the first time. The only hitch was that I had the escape door in the front open and the thought he could go on out it. I had to scoot out fast and slam the door in his face or we would have had a stuck horse. Shunka is decidedly wider than that door. This picture was taken after I had left the little pen and he was investigating the trailer on his own. As you can see from his swirling tail his knickers were in a twist. After that first time we have been working on come on partway and back off, on part way and back out. Today I got him to come all the way in and back all the way out once. He spends quite a bit of time investigating it on his own every day.
Here is my
husband, LT, and Thousand in the trailer. Thousand went in even faster than
Shunka. L. T. walked in and Thousand walked in with him. They were both
surprised and scared but no one got hurt. Now they are practicing for control
also. The results you get with clicker training are amazing..
